Acai Bowl Tips

  • It’s best to use a high power blender with a tamper stick. This way you can push the fruit around in the bowl of the blender without having to add more liquid. If you don’t have a tamper stick, you can occasionally turn off the blender, stir everything around, then start it back up again.
  • I find that the texture of the acai bowls are best if served immediately. If you’re looking to make them in advance for meal prep purposes, you can blend up the fruit mixture and store it in small containers in the freezer. Let the acai mixture partially thaw, give it a stir and you’ll be ready to eat.
  • Acai berries are small fruit from Central and South America and are a superfood because of their high antioxidant levels. You can find packets of acai berry puree in the freezer section of grocery stores, typically with the frozen fruit.
  • Feel free to get creative with the toppings! Some of my favorite options aside from fruit and granola include chia seeds, shaved coconut, almond butter, a drizzle of honey, sliced almonds, hemp hearts, goji berries or cacao nibs.

Quick Tip

If you’re looking to make this recipe vegan, you can use agave or maple syrup instead of the honey.

Flavor Variations

While this recipe is great as-is, you can easily customize the ingredients to your tastes.

  • Protein: Add some protein to make a more filling meal by using greek yogurt instead of coconut milk, or try a scoop of protein powder.
  • Milk: No coconut milk on hand? Almond milk and cow’s milk also work well.
  • Fruit: Swap out the frozen mixed berries for other options such as mango, dragon fruit, peaches, pineapple or even cherries.

I make these acai bowls almost every week – it’s a great way to get that smoothie shop flavor at home. The topping possibilities are endless, my kids love to make their own acai creations for a fun snack.
