Arts Life The Plain Dealer Breaking news: Messiaen work exquisitely played DONALD ROSENBERG Plain Dealer Reporter MUSIC Two of the 20th century's most daring composers were born a day and a continent apart in December 1908: France's Olivier Messiaen (the 10th) and America's Elliott Carter (the 11th). Their centenaries next week have been giving musicians ample opportunity to celebrate this year. Carter is alive and creatively active, while Messiaen died in 1992. To honor the latter, the Cleveland Museum of Art's Viva! Gala Around Town series is presenting concerts devoted largely to chamber works. The earliest, and arguably greatest, of these pieces is "Quatuor pour la Fin du Temps" for the End of which members of the Cleveland Orchestra performed Wednesday in the museum's Donna and James Reid Gallery.

Messiaen composed the quartet while incarcerated in a German -war camp in Silesia in 1940 and 1941. Scored for clarinet, violin, cello and piano, the work comprises eight movements embracing Messiaen's characteristic themes of religious and natural wonder. The composer himself played piano at the premiere in January 1941, when fellow prisoners a and Nazi guards were transported from grim reality to a realm of sacred radiance and fervor. In Sunday Arts aspects of Messiaen's art that would become familiar: luminous unison lines, spectral and bold harmonic colors, languid and brilliant birdcalls, ingenious rhythmic activity. The Catholicism that was so central to Messiaen's life pervades the quartet's inspiration.

Evocations of angels can be heard in the soaring and insistent phrases. The solo cello and violin lines have yearning statements that, rather than ending time, almost compel it to stand still. From the piano's lilting colors and clarinet's expressive and perky orations, Messiaen creates cavalcades of tonal awe. Much of the piece's glorious substance was muted Wednesday by the space, which didn't promote sufficient clarity for details to be savored. But one could still sense great performance in the air.

Clarinetist Franklin Cohen, violinist Stephen Rose, cellist Richard Weiss and pianist Joela Jones conveyed Messiaen's messages with exceptional fluidity, grace and animation, as if they were engaged in close encounters of a sublime kind. This honor is not lost on Burns. "It's an incredible gift," he said. "We spend so much of our lives devising walls to separate us. But we're so connected and close. That's the ongoing message of the films." The next major Burns work will be a study of the U.S.

National Parks. It will air on PBS in September. "In many ways, it's the most emotional film yet," Burns said. "There's something deeply personal about standing at the rim of the Grand Canyon or gazing on the wonders of Yosemite. It's not just what you're looking at, it's about who's holding your hand who was with you." The film will document the achievements of well-known visionaries, including John Muir and Theodore Roosevelt, but, in true Burns style, it also will recognize the passion of unsung heroes.
