Also in the planning stage is a series of flights of Pioneers to Venus starting in late 1976. These craft would orbit the cloud- shrouded planet and send probes into its dense, hot atmosphere. None is Financed None of these advanced missions is yet financed, but the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) hopes to begin to seek funds for them in its fiscal 1974 budget. The grand tour project was cancelled in January because of budget restrictions. It would have sent a series of large, highly sophisticated spacecraft on past Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto.

One probe would fly by three different planets over a period of eight years, taking advantage of a rare planetary alignment. Dr. John E. Naugle, associate NASA administrator for space science, told Congress last week the proposed flights of Mariners to Jupiter and Saturn would each cost less than $360 million. The grand tour of four missions had a $900 million price tag.

The Spacecraft The spacecraft for the a i a missions in 1977 would be based on the design of Mariner 9 which is now mapping Mars from orbit. Each will carry television cameras to flash back detailed pictures of both Jupiter and Saturn. Each probe would fly close by Jupiter' and then, with an accelerating assist by the great planet's powerful gravity, swing on to fly by Saturn, the ringed planet that is sixth out from the sun. The Mariners would be launched by big Titan- Centaur rockets and reach Jupiter in iy 2 years and Saturn two years later. Naugle said the probes could fly close to Saturn's puzzling rings and very close to its big moon, Triton.
